How To Make Your Own Mulled Wine

December 16, 2008

This recipe serves approximately 6 to 8 people.

Ingredients:

1 cinnamon stick

1 sliced orange (including peel, preferably organic)

1 sliced lemon (including peel, preferably organic)

4 allspice berries

1 bottle of red wine (1.25 pints/750ml)

1 cup of water

2 teaspoons of ground ginger

2 teaspoons of ground nutmeg

100g caster sugar, or to taste

Method:

  1. Place the spices and sliced fruit into a large saucepan, add the wine and water.

  2. Heat gently on a low heat for approximately 15 minutes to infuse the flavours into the wine.  Do not allow to boil or overheat because this makes the alcohol evaporate. If it isn’t sweet enough for you, add the desired amount of sugar and stir until dissolved.

  3. Strain and ladle into cups or heat-proof glasses. Alternatively make ahead of time and re-heat gently just before serving.

If you prefer a non-alcoholic version substitute the wine for apple and orange juice.

If you don’t have time or can’t be bothered with all that, you can buy a pack of ready-made organic mulling spices from any of the following stockists:
