What’s your theme?

January 25, 2007

Well, it’s the time of year for the gardeners amongst us to plan our gardens and place our seed and plant orders ready for the spring.

Having recently moved house, I have the joy of being able to plan a herb garden from scratch. Decisions, decisions!

If you would like to start a herb garden, whether it is a few herbs in your kitchen windowsill or a larger more adventurous plan for the garden, a good starting point is

to think about what you want to use the herbs for. Are they for ornamental use, fragrance, cooking, crafts, medicinal or just for fun?

To help inspire you, here are a few ideas for garden themes: herbal teas, culinary, attract butterflies & other wildlife, scented garden, pot pourri garden, sensual garden, flowers for drying, flowers for cutting, herbs for wine and liqueur making or herbs for dyeing.

Next, you need to note the soil and sun/shade present in the place you wish to plant and ensure you choose the herbs that will thrive best there. If there is a particular herb you like that will not tolerate that area of the garden or the type of soil there, a useful tip is to plant it in a pot and place it in the most appropriate place i.e. sun/shady part of the garden/house.

Here are a few herb seed suppliers to get you started:

Hope this inspires your plans!
